Born and raised in Pocatello, Idaho, Shayne Stoakes is a self-taught artist and lifelong railroader whose work reflects a deep appreciation for transportation, nature, and the American West. His artistic perspective is shaped by more than three decades with Union Pacific Railroad, where he worked as a fireman/oiler and later as a safety coordinator in the locomotive mechanical department. His firsthand experience with locomotives, machinery, and the railroad industry provides a unique foundation for his detailed and realistic approach to painting.
Shayne’s work explores the romance and nostalgia of travel, the power and beauty of transportation, the splendor of wildlife, and the vast grandeur of the American West. From locomotives, aircraft and classic vehicles to wildlife and Western scenery, his diverse subjects share a common thread—a desire to capture not only how a scene looks, but also the feeling and story it evokes.
Working primarily in acrylic and oil, Shayne is known for his attention to detail, precision, and commitment to realism. His paintings often transport viewers to another time, inviting them to recall a place they have experienced, a journey they remember, or an era they may only imagine. Through his work, Shayne seeks to preserve the character and romance of a changing world while celebrating the enduring connection between people, transportation, and the landscapes they travel through.
